Situation Leeds
What is the Canvas?

A day-long symposium of talks and discussion, interrogating the differences between open submission festivals such as Situation Leeds 07 and curated events, with a particular focus on the experience of making work for the public realm from the artist's perspective.

Art Historian and critic Alison Green will provide the contextual and historical perspective and artist Wolfgang Weileder will outline his experiences as an artist working in different contexts in the public realm. The event will be chaired by Matthew Kieran. Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Leeds University.

The afternoon session will comprise a choice of four workshops focussing on different aspects of this type of practice:

* The social geography of the city with David Bell, School of Geography, University of Leeds.
* The autonomy of the artist with Lucy Gibson, artist.
* The experience of working on the fringe with Neville Gabie, artist.
* The spectator experience with Adam Sutherland, Director, Grizedale Arts
