Situation Leeds
Festival of contemporary art at various sites across the city

From housing and redevelopment to social history, allotments and bus stops to markets and malls, our city is packed with creative stimulation and thought provoking issues. Situation Leeds - a unique contemporary art festival - sets out to explore art in public places and to present the work of regional and national artists responding to the stimuli offered up by the city, its residents and visitors.

Led by artists and key arts organisations in the city, Situation Leeds has doubled since its debut in 2005. Packed into two weeks, this year’s festival sees over 100 artists produce more than 74 projects in over 60 venues across the city.

All artists responded to an open submission, however, a series of themes runs through the festival:

- The relationship between art in the public realm and its site, audience or within a social context

- The contribution that public art can make to society - its environment and the people

- Art in the public realm can be spectacular, discrete or hidden; permanent, temporary, ephemeral or intangible.

The results provide Leeds residents and visitors with the opportunity to discover art on their doorsteps which questions, engages and challenges. Projects presented include installations, films, site-specific work, sculpture and performance as well as seminars and talks.
