PL:ay - a one day festival of adventure, anticipation and encounters

PL:ay is a one-day festival showcasing artists predominantly from the South West presenting live art, video, photography and installation with a strong performative quality in Plymouth, for free. PL:ay will take place on Sat 28 Jul 2007 in Plymouth, UK with a launch event on the evening of Fri 27 Jul 2007.

At PL:ay, the artworks presented all have a common approach – these artists want the experience to be enjoyable for their audience, even though performing the pieces themselves might be a test of endurance like Search Party’s table-tennis marathon Search Party vs Plymouth, or the artist might not have very much control over what happens like Augusto Corrierri in his piece Performance for Beginners. (Watch his instructional video at myspace.com/criticalnetwork)

Some of PL:ay’s other artists will be presenting live artworks that are simply available to be watched or listened to like Sam Hasler’s shopfront performance Lift or Dawn Scarfe’s live sound composition Rounds: Smeaton's Light, but unlike conventional visual art they will only take place for a certain period of time and will relate specifically to their surroundings.

For many other artists at PL:ay humour is a defining point - Jenny Hunt's video Another Brick in the Wall takes a contemporary slant on protest, while Dando & Weitz question the origins of current organic branding in their installation Organic Propaganda and Low Profile try to work out this society thinks it is important to be charming, entertaining or ‘on our best behaviour’ in their performance Show For You.

PL:ay is produced jointly by LOW PROFILE and one.c, and is funded by Arts Council England, Plymouth City Council, Plymouth College of Art and Design and Plymouth Arts Centre with support from Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery. PL:ay's project interns are Dan Baker, Natalie Parrett and Ruth Shorrock.
